The Polish Economic Institute (PIE) has published a new study confirming the critical role of foreign workers in the functioning of the Polish economy.
According to Yavp.pl, based on the analysis by experts (PIE), without foreigners, every fifth company in Poland would have problems functioning. Only 13% of firms would be able to cope with such a situation by hiring more Poles. The remaining 67% of companies do not hire foreigners, so the hypothetical situation does not concern them.
Between 2022 and 2024, the number of foreigners working in Poland increased by 33%. This underscores their growing presence and importance.
Sectors most dependent on foreigners:
Foreigners are most often hired by firms in the transport, forwarding, and logistics (TSL) sector – 46%. Next are industry – 40% and construction – 36%. In trade and services, this percentage is 23%.
Specific problems companies would face:
32% of companies that would feel the absence of foreigners fear they would not be able to fulfill orders.
30% predict the need to limit the scale of activities or abandon part of the services, especially in construction and the TSL sector.
24% of firms (mainly trade and TSL) take into account a decrease in service quality or delivery delays.
For 18% of enterprises, especially manufacturing and TSL, the absence of foreigners would threaten the continuity of operations.
15% of firms, mainly manufacturing, would consider replacing their labor with automation.

Although the PIE study does not specifically single out Ukrainians in this report, ZUS data shows that the majority of foreigners registered in the social insurance system in Poland (over 67%) are Ukrainian citizens.
